If you’re stumped on what to present your family’s biggest Billie Eilish fan for the holidays, Amazon may have just solved your problem – assuming you’re willing to spend $230 on them. The Billie Eilish Limited Edition Echo Studio, which has the melancholy-voiced singer pasted on the side of Amazon highest-end Echo speaker, the Studio, was announced today and is available for pre-order. In addition, the record cover art from Eilish’s new album “Happier Than Ever” was printed onto a new beige-hued fabric and wrapped around the Echo Studio.
It results in a little unsettling product that someone, somewhere, is supposed to want to put in their home. This is Amazon first excursion into celebrity skins; earlier attempts to adorn their bulbous smart speakers have centered on pandas and tigers intended for children’s rooms. The combination between Billie and the bassist Echo appears to be aimed squarely at the tweenager set, as evidenced by the frilly boudoir included in the collab’s promotional photos.
Many Billie fans may be disappointed by this move’s commercialism, as they gravitate to the singer’s genre-defying music in part because of her ability to transcend the preconceptions that accompany most young female pop stars. In an Amazon blog post, the song writer wrote about the device saying, “I can’t wait for my cutie fans to be able to listen to my new album Happier Than Ever in spatial audio, available on Music Unlimited.”
The Billie Studio is a limited-edition device that costs $30 more than the non-Billie version, which costs $199. You do get six months of Music packaged with it — and this applies to both new and existing Amazon Music users — so you can listen to “Happier Than Ever” in spatial audio. However, there are no additional Billie features here, and you won’t be able to have her dulcet tones as your new Alexa voice.
