Communication Tech is being used by Hospitals to Redesign Pharma Needs

Many normal processes and policies in Hospitals across the country were disturbed by the fast introduction of the new coronavirus. Similarly, the pandemic interrupted pharmacy clinical and operational workflows, pushing pharmacists to find novel ways to accomplish common operations in order to protect care team members and the general public. Prior to a dramatic surge in coronavirus cases in Utah, administrators at Murray, Utah-based Intermountain Medical Center swiftly devised a remote pharmacy services plan after watching the impact of COVID-19 across the country.

The plan was created to reduce the danger of infection and to avoid potential staffing shortages caused by illness or quarantine. The objectives were to protect the general public, patients, clinical pharmacists, and other caregivers while maintaining high pharmacy clinical service standards. Pharmacy personnel had appropriate remote access and were equipped with the right technology and resources, allowing them to participate remotely in daily patient care rounds and consults.

Intermountain Medical Program has a comprehensive stroke facility and is a level I trauma centre. It is the largest of Intermountain Healthcare’s 25 Hospitals, serving four adjacent states. It includes 504 inpatient beds and 80 emergency department beds, with an annual ED visitation of about 90,000.

There were 157 pharmacy staff members when the remote pharmacy services strategy was launched, including 73 pharmacists and 7 residents. A multidisciplinary team devised a plan that combined remote and on-site pharmacy services. It was intended to avoid exposure and consequent sickness, to handle any staffing shortages in advance, and to guarantee that clinical pharmacy services are not disrupted. As additional information regarding the virus’s transmission became available, the hospital devised a rotating schedule that kept workgroups together on-site while still allowing them to rotate through remote tasks.
